I am a Canadian woman who loves to write. In fact, I make my living at writing.

Mother will you please
tie these ribbons in my hair?
Pull back the strands which tickle
my child's face so fair.

This hair that twists and knots
when I climb trees so high.
Tattered ribbons flying
as I try to reach the sky.
Mother will you please
take these ribbons from my hair?
Because now I'm a woman,
For these I do not care.
Ribbons are for babies,
for girls with knobby knees,
tomboys chasing butterflys,
climbing gnarly trees.
Mother will you please
buy me ribbons, satin blue?
He said my hair is pretty.
Do you think that that is true?
Please tie them tightly,
so they might stay in place.
They must be just perfect,
and show every curve of face.
Father will you please
tie the ribbons on my gown?
Today I must be beautiful.
I can't let him down.
He must think I'm stunning.
A wonder to behold.
Please dearest father
straighten every fold.
Husband will you please
take these ribbons from my hair?
Kiss my neck so gently
'till your kisses I can't bear.
I'll become a woman
as I lay upon our bed.
And you will be my husband,
the man that I have wed.
Now I take the ribbons
of palest, shiny blue
Weave them though the blanket
I made for baby new.
Blue satin ribbons
a snapshot of my years.
More than woven fabric
with memories so dear.
