This holiday is similar to the International Women’s Day. It originates from the Victorian times, when small children started to work far from their houses and transferred all the money they earned to the family budget. That time they had only one day in the year to spend it with the parents. Usually they presented small gifts to their mothers and grannies - a bunch of flowers or eggs.Nowadays British children present flowers to their mothers and make home duties for them. There are different types of holiday celebration; they trace their roots back to Greek spring festival in the honor of Rhea, wife of Cronus and mother of many gods and goddesses. In Rome in 250 B.C. people held ceremonies in the honor of another goddesses-mother, Cybele. These religious Roman celebrations lasted 3 days - from the 15th to the 18th of March. In England at the beginning of the 17th century people started to celebrate Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of the Lent. It was the holiday of all mothers in England. As Christianity was constantly spreading in Europe, this Sunday soon became a holiday of the Mother Church, a day of spiritual power that gives us our life and protects from evil. In the course of time this holiday mixed with the secular holiday. As it was the time of rich aristocrats and big villas, the most part of servants lived in the houses of their owners. All servants had a day-off for the Mothering Sunday; they returned to their families to spend the day with their mothers. Festive mood was guaranteed by a special cake, the so-called “mother’s cake”. People were supposed to visit their mothers this day and present them this cake and after that they received the mother’s blessing. Nowadays Mother’s Day is a serene holiday. Women relax and their men do all household duties and cook. As is customary, people bake a simnel cake decorated with 12 marzipan balls for this day. This tradition of 12 balls started in the pre-Christian times and symbolizes 12 Zodiac signs. The name of this cake is connected with the Latin name of chisel, "simila". Such cakes and cookies were baked and sold in England and France on Sundays during the Lent. In France people usually baked cookies under this recipe; they were decorated with a cross of sugar icing. Sometimes husbands invite their wives to restaurants to celebrate the holiday. Children present flowers, cards, and other gifts to their moms. It is necessary to congratulate your mother that’s why all sons and daughters regardless of the place they stay at, call their mothers and send them letters, cards, or e-mail messages for Mother’s Day. So, call or mail your mother on Mother’s Day even if you are not English!
