That Day

Everyone wakes up and begins another day
No one expects what's around the way.
I sit in class and see teachers walking in and out
I don't pay attention but still wonder what the commotion is about.
I see my teacher's eyes fill with tears
As another comes and whispers in her ear.
It's about 9:30 and she tells the class there's tragic news
The World Trade Center was hit and the Pentagon too.
Foreign men hijacked four U.S. planes
How could they be so coldhearted to cause so much pain?
I hurt inside for the ones who lost friends and family
I just closed my eyes and prayed for our country.
Every station on the radio was talking about America's tragedy
September 11, 2001, will go down in history.
Getting home, on T.V., I actually see the horror the people went through
One plane crashed into building one and then building two.
People were jumping out of windows 110 stories high
Trying to keep themselves from burning alive.
The streets of New York were filled with thousands running around
My mind went blank and I couldn't hear a sound.
It seemed as if I was watching a video in history on World War II
But in all reality this was something I was going through.
Over 300 firefighters died and thousands others were found dead
Once again I closed my eyes and bowed my head.
Dear God what's next? Are we all going to be okay?
I just have to sit back waiting to hear more news as I reach another day.

This is a touching poem not only for the people that witnessed it but the ones that lost their loved ones in this horrific chaos! You write very beautifully!
