Out of the Cold

When I had your youth
(just a pair of decades)
I loved.
Without reason.
Or flaw.
As I know
God intends.

One morning
(as if only a dream)
I awoke
To find her just a memory.

Artificial life
(void of spirit)
Then,
Defined my existence.

Yes, I encountered love.

Oh, not really love.
Just for the moment.
(like a piece of chocolate cake)
Full of conditions.
Empty of faith or promises.

I survived.
Stayed alive.
(clinically, that is)
No heart behind the pulse.
No thoughts inspired by joy.

And now.
(as I’m resigned to mediocrity)
There’s you.
Radiating warmth
Through my frozen heart.

My spirit revived
(as if in suspended animation)
I burst from within.
My heart pounds.
My arteries strain.

I have a crush on you
(like a school kid)
I’m so glad you’re here.
Take my hand.
I adore you.
I’m in love with you.
Honey, honey.
I love you.
