The Ocean and The Cliff

The ocean crashed upon the cliff
Shattering herself against him
He smiled to taste her briny kiss
But said he would not swim

She wrapped him in her wet caress
Against his hardness she conceded
But he would not let her pull him in
Tho' through the night she pleaded

She flowed with the fickle moon
Inconstant and untrue
He would not leave the solid earth
Uncertainty to pursue

The moon waxes and wanes each month
To swell and ebb the tide
But the sea will never leave the shore
With salty spray she cried

As the cruel hand of Fate decreed
The land and sea collide
But ever shall they be apart
Into her crystal depths he sighed

A hunger and yearning unfulfilled
Sorrow at the water's edge
The passion of the pounding surf
Echoing forever the ocean's pledge
