The light it flickers, I suppress a tear,
A soft sad sigh fills my straining ear.
These little signs around me are clear,
My heart is full, I sense you near.

Only fifteen with a life so full,
You were our beloved, shining jewel.
Of your inner torment we were totally blind,
As sinister thoughts filled your mind.

You left us on a summer's day,
Whistling as you went your favourite way.
No sign of the grief we would endure,
Your life was planned, we were so sure.

When you failed to return late that night,
We had a feeling that was not right.
So your brother searched in the torch light glare,
We heard his scream when he found you there.

Your long curls hid your lovely eyes,
Your quiet expression showed surprise.
The rope had broken your slender neck,
As you'd kicked the chair along the deck.

Your brother lowered you with tear filled eyes,
Sobbing his heart-rending final goodbyes.
We took you home to talk awhile,
You looked at peace, you seemed to smile.

With every day that slowly goes by,
I softly ask you "Why oh why"?
I go over your words, what else can I do?
My heart is empty, I shall always love you.
