Sleeping Monster

He displays his violent temper.
I shrink back and whimper .
Catching me off guard,
He slaps my face hard.
I fall to the ground and recoil in terror.
Was it him or was I the one in error?
At what point did this conversation go so wrong?
How did this monster lay dormant for so long?
I struggle from shock to rise to my feet.
My heart races as I move to retreat.
I back away from him as if he’s a stranger.
Every nerve in me screams that I am in danger.
He moves to me apologetic desperation in his voice.
I listen as he explains that escape in not a choice
He states that I am his property and thus must obey.
I realize that there is nothing for me to say
I cannot change what happened, I must suffer in silence
And forever be the victim of domestic violence.
