Sleep, Dear Child

Sleep, dear child
underneath the grassy tomb
no dirt shall dirty your dress any more
because between you and earth
there is a door
to your coffin
Sleep, dear child
with your hair crumpled beneath your head
the worms crawling in you
as you lay in your new bed
Sleep, dear child
keep your eyes closed
curled up toes
dress has holes, moth eaten
Sleep, dear child
all is silent now
except for the traffic
near the cemetery
which you cannot hear
because a nightcrawler
is in your ear and out your nose
Sleep, dear child
whoever you were
do not stir
your tombstone is crooked
and sanded with age
Sleep, dear child in your velvet-lined cage.
