In the Ghetto

As I sit here gazing out of my window,
admiring my quiet, beautiful, suburban town,
suddenly the air is filled with pain, and I start to frown,
but please don't get me wrong all of you all.
I know I'm blessed, but before I rose, I had a hard fall.
I reminisce about the ghetto. A straight hood like town. There are memories I just can't let go.
I'm talking straight hood.
Oh, and I'm not being judgmental.
'Cause I know the people there would leave if they could.
A town that no one usually makes it far.
Only down the street to a bar. Or, a crack house.
And, it just ain’t normal if your not living with a mouse.
A town where all the 3 year olds know the latest song.
Don't get me wrong. It's good that they can speak,
but why not teach them ABC's or 123.
It's a damn shame! And just about every teenage boy becomes a victim of the dope game.
But wait, It ain’t his fault! Yeah, whatever.
At least that's what they were taught.
When you go out and commit a crime,
Just tell them you did it because your below the poverty line. That should get you at ease.
I once saw a junky running down the street
with a refrigerator on his back.
That just goes to show the power of crack.
And don't even get me started on the schools.
Those ghetto kids just sat back and laughed at rules.
But, get this! Regardless of all the hardship
that comes from living in a slum,
I was always taught
"Don't ever forget where you come from".
And, I won't. But, when I left,
I learned something that I want all who live there to know. Don't ever let it stop you from gettting where you gotta go. So, the next time all of you
who are less fortunate feel like you can't take it.
Just think, despite all the hardship,
If I could, you too can make it!

This poem is dedicated to all of you who undergo trials and tribulation because of where you come from. I did not write this to judge, or make fun of any of those who are either from, or live in the so-called "ghetto". I am not really from this lifestyle, but that does not mean that I cannot feel your pain. So, along with that, I truly hope that no one is offended by this, but inspired. Remember to keep your head up!
