Why can't he?

This summer I went on a little trip with a couple of friends, one whom I've liked for a while now, and it was great. During the trip we got a bit closer and on the way I sat next to him and we ended up making out and he told me he loved me.Kinda... Because he thought I was asleep. :) OK. So we kept in touch the rest of the summer break and now I still see him at school and everyone asks why were not together but he pretends he has no clue as to what happened over the summer, even though everyone says it's obvious he likes me. I like him but why cant he say something. Anything... straight out instead of making me wonder?
