 | Since the time of Cher’s experiments and childish tricks of Christina Ricci there hasn’t been such dark persons as Angelina Jolie. Always in dark, all body tattooed, a reckless girl without prohibitions and restrictions, a “spittle” into “good form rules” and a dream of journalists – for her lips are always ready to utter provocative and frankly tactless expressions. John Voight, calling his daughter Angelina Jolie, that is “Pretty Little Angel”, couldn’t imagine even in a bad dream that in 25 years his “angel” would become a vamp-woman, provoking everybody and considering scandals, accompanying her everywhere, a norm of life.Angelina Jolie is fond of shocking people. She is one of those who at any price want to be the centre of attention– both admiring and indignant. It’s not important for her whether she is liked or hated. The most important is that her name causes distinct associations and can be hardly mixed up with someone else. It’s half the battle in Hollywood: “Be different and you will be remembered”. To look fundamentally different from Hollywood stars, Jolie has chosen colors in an ideal way: dominating black color that is disliked by today's starlets. The latter choose pastel colors and image a la Gwyneth Paltrow. Almost all rivals of Jolie are cachectic, awfully correct blondes. They agitate for Greenpeace, take participation in charity actions, lead a healthy lifestyle and are ready to sacrifice everything for career. The media, colleagues and public are rather fed up with their politically correct expressions and endless insinuations on a topic “The last virgin of America”. It was the proper time for appearing a new “epatage queen”, braving own “badness” – and the press has “dug out” Jolie. However, it’s more likely that Angelina created her image not proceeding from the current situation, but from peculiarities of her own character. In interviews she often mentions that likes to live at the breaking point of emotions, physical forces, on the brink of possible in the modern society. “I always live for the moment. Don’t like to build plans for future. Tomorrow everything may change – my life, my image, people around me, my occupation… Otherwise, it would be boring to live”.
One shouldn’t forget, that Angelina (or Angie) is not simply “a girl from the street”, but the daughter of Oscar winning popular actor John Voight, famous “Midnight Cowboy”, one of the 70’s biggest stars. Although, now Voight doesn’t act so often, his name in Hollywood still means a great deal. Of course, as it should be, a young star took the second name as a pseudonym – to a greater extent for formality. Both in Hollywood and outside everybody knew her “actor” roots - all the more Jolie is proud of her father.
Angelina was born in Los Angeles, on June 4th, 1975, in a family of Voight and little known actress Marcheline Bertrand (now Angelina's manager), half French. Towards the daughter’s birth John and Marcheline’s marriage was already off: when the girl was born, they separated. “I was never angry with my dad. He was the perfect example of a man who’s impossible to be married”. Angie and her elder brother – James Heaven Voight – lived with the mother, but the dad took a direct participation in their upbringing. Each of the parents strived for becoming a main authority for children and having got this, Angelina learnt to manipulate both of them as far back as in her childhood. When Voight and Bertran understood what was going on, it was late: Angie went out of control.
In school Angelina didn’t get along with teachers. She was enrolled in a children group of those, who needed the help of psychotherapist. “They enrolled in there everybody, whose parents were divorced. Our psychotherapist used to say that it was our “units” who were guilty of everything. It seemed to her that we, p*or children, would never be able to adapt to life. I was assuring her that I had adapted in a nice way, but for some reason she wanted it to be the other way. After all, I thought out some fairy-tale for her – oh, how glad she was of it! Since then I don’t believe in psychotherapy”. Teachers and doctors, working with Angie, also returned the favor: it was written in her reference that the girl was “unrestrained, inclined to antisocial psychopathy”. “Since childhood I was called sociopath, - Jolie says. – When I grew up, I tried to get to know what that meant. So, I came to a bookshop and asked: “Where do you keep literature about sociopaths?” The seller answered: “Look under the heading “serial maniac”. Well, what a good company I’ve got”. –my thought was.
Luckily, it was cinematographers and not maniacs who kept her company. In 1982 Angelina made her debut in a film “Looking to Get Out”, co-author and producer of which her was father. At the age of 12 Jolie enrolled in Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and attended actor lessons along with adults. During studying she felt craving for strange and eccentric.
Since13 years old Angelina Jolie has been collecting cold steel. At the age of 14 Angie got involved with a guy, brought him home, and lived with him for 2 years. Eventually he was fed up with the constant tendency of Angelina to play with knives (her hands were always cut). When she was 16 she nearly perished, doctors could scarcely save her life – a dangerous play finished with a big cut on carotid. It was the time when her boyfriend left her. Now Angelina has reminders of that time such as tattoos of Japanese hieroglyphs, crosses and dragons.
Although her dream as a child was actually to become a funeral director, 16-year-old Angelina stepped from screen to a podium, having become a model. Her face appeared in numerous glossy magazines, as well as in music videos of Lenny Kravitz, The Lemonheads, Meat Loaf and even Rolling Stones. At the same time Jolie didn’t give up her dramatic education. It’s impossible to stop Jolie when it concerns a role or taking a decision. This trait gives her job a frightening intension. In real life she is also incredibly vigorous. It seems that Jolie isn’t able to work not to the full capacity. “I don’t like when I am lightly touched, she confesses. – You see, I like when I am grasped and held tightly, if someone strives not to let me go, and if I am not touched in a proper way, I hate such touching. It’s like about handshake – I don’t like a light one. If you want to shake my hand, shake properly”.
Jolie found death more attractive and captivating than dull and dreary life. It went since childhood, when at 9 she was taken to a funeral (her grandpa died) and the girl was charmed by the ceremony – mourning suits, bunches of flowers on a fresh dug grave, sorrowful music… She thought that there was nothing more wonderful in the world! Since then she started to wear clothes of black colors, walk along graveyard, and read books about art of embalming. But still, she lacked courage to sever all ties with life. Then Angelina decided to hire… a professional killer to kill her. She was lucky indeed. It looked as she met a guardian angel in his person. “Who knows, life is so different! May be soon everything will change and you will have hankering for living on!” – this nice and very handsome “professional” was able to talk the girl out of it and even refused to take her money. She didn’t see him anymore…
At the age of 18 Jolie decided that her vocation was movie world. The first film where she could get a noticeable role was a futuristic action film “Cyborg II”. Angie played a pretty-woman- cyberg, fallen in love with a hand-to-hand fight trainer. After that the actress made a little break waiting for more effective roles. They didn’t keep her waiting for a long time. In 1995 she acted in “Hackers”, in 1996 in “Foxfire”, but a universal recognition came to Jolie in 1997, when she played a main character’s wife in “George Wallace”. Foreign critics, accredited in Hollywood, awarded the girl with “Golden Globe” for the best woman supporting role. A year later Jolie got the same prize for the role in “Gia”, about a tragic lot of a top-model-lesbian dying from AIDS. In a break between two “globe bringing” movies the actress had time to act in “Playing God”, where her partners were David Duchovni and Timothy Hutton. “All sex was cut out of this movie. We shot my erotic scenes with both partners and they were left on the clipping room’s floor”.
After “Playing God” Jolie was ascribed a love affair with Timothy Hutton, although by that time she was already married. With a future husband Jolie met while acting in “Hackers”, where they played computer whiz-kids, accidentally breaking through a huge corporation’s net, dealing with dark affairs, and thus becoming a target for killers. For Miller –present idol of English youth – it was the first project in movies (before he acted only in serials), and for Jolie – the first big project. “We were given 3 weeks for learning to go skating and get used to a computer keyboard, - Jolie remembers, - it was paradise to go skating with Jonny and get money for it!” Their wedding remained in everybody’s memory for long. Jolie wore skintight rubber trousers and wrote the groom's name across her white silk blouse with her own blood.
Having married to Jonny, Angelina Jolie felt a taste for life and movies, she acted a lot and with pleasure. Because of shootings in different cities and countries, they spent little time together. That’s why Angelina was becoming more and more irritated with his craving for playing computer games, especially his favorite one – “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”… On the whole, their marriage lasted for half a year.
Later came “The Bone Collector” (1999) - the movie about maniac who is pursued by lady in a police uniform (Jolie) with the help of a paralyzed analyst (Denzel Washington). Drama “Girl, Interrupted” by James Mangold, shot by an autobiographic book of Susanna Kaysen, should have become a benefit performance of Winona Ryder. In actual fact it happened in a different way. Jolie, acting an aggressive sociopath simply stole her eminent partner’s show, having got “Oscar” beside an annual “Globe". Winona wasn’t given any prize.
In May 2000 Jolie got married to another “Oscar” laureate Billy Bob Thornton, who she got acquainted with as far back as in 1998 when acting in a comedy of Mike Newell “Pushing Tin”. Friends frequently told 45 aged Billy Bob, a constant character of Hollywood scandalous events, that he should get acquainted with the actress. “Her name is Angelina Jolie. You are just created for each other”. Since then they tried not to part, although could not advertise their relations: Billy was already engaged to actress Laura Dern, and Angelina had to execute her divorce with Jonny.
The first time when they appeared together in public was March 2000, when Angelina got “Oscar” for the best supporting role in “Girl, Interrupted”. The wedding was celebrated in Las Vegas. They were wearing jeans and T-shirts at the ceremony which cost them only $189…
The newly wedded were worth of each other. Like people out of the common, they never made hackneyed presents, heartily trying to outdo each other in this “competition”. For instance, one day Billy gifted to the beloved a tiny pig Miss Piggy, and she made him happy by a black varnished billiard table for $10 000.
But their idyll was destroyed by movies. This time Angelina happened to act an International Humanitarian Mission’s employee in “Beyond Borders”. As usual, Angelina sank in her role so deeply that with this movie completed went to Africa and Cambodia as the UN Refugees Commission Goodwill Ambassador. The actress was so stroke by what she had seen there that sacrificed a million dollar to one of the local orphanages. In this very orphanage she saw a kid whom she swore to take from there. She even contrived to talk Billy into flying with her to Cambodia, although he, as is known, doesn’t stand planes. Billy didn’t show any special delight about that idea, however during half a year, while the documents were processed, he said he wasn’t against addition to the family. The more so, having signed a contract for the next two series of “Lara Croft”, Angelina bound herself not to bear within 3 years.
But once the 8 y.o. child appeared in their Californian house, named Maddox, everything has changed. She spent 24 hours round on that child, having forgotten without a trace about a loving wife’s duties. Even at night the child shared a bride-bed with them. With deep concern Billy kept to the beaten track - went on a spree. Papers “shouted” about his new girlfriends. And on his wife’s birthday he went in a tour…
Angelina Jolie, having got the divorce, swore that would make everything to make her child’ life happy. Even her father, who’s very close to her, often visits her to see the nephew. By the way, that time her ex-husband Jonny Lee Miller often called her, expressing in conversations more than a friendly participation.
Today Angelina is one of the brightest young stars, but it doesn’t really matters for her. “My dramatic abilities are the same. Simply now my face stands out on magazines’ covers oftener. A producer would feel easier to invite me to his new movie – he wouldn’t ask: “Jolie? Who is it?” Like an actress I still have something to offer producers. I try to put into my characters everything that I have. I will never accept a role if I am not sure that I suit it better than anybody else. But at the same time, I try not to forget that movies are not life. Whatever you may think about my character, it’s not me. I am constantly in search, and this process is endless”.
Now the twice-divorced Angie is married to a big Hollywood celebrity Brad Pitt, who they got acquainted with while shooting in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. On May 27, 2006, the 30-year-old actress gave birth to Pitt’s daughter.
