Mother’s Day

Origins of Mother’s Day should be being sought in spring holidays, devoted to Rhea by Ancient Greece inhabitants. Since 1600 England got a tradition to celebrate Mother’s Sunday. That day, taking place on the 4th Sunday of Fast, mothers were honored. History of Mother’s Day kept some interesting traditions. At that time the poor worked for the rich as servants, as a rule living at their masters’ dwellings, far from their own family. No doubt, they couldn’t visit their parents or family of theirs often. But on Mother’s Day these people were given free time to visit and congratulate their mother. A traditional present was then fancy cake, presented to mothers as the sign of respect.

After Christianity spreading, people began to widely celebrate the Day of Mother Church – the symbol of spiritual power that gives life and guards from danger. As time was passing by, people began to celebrate the day of Mother Church and Mother’s Sunday as one holiday.

The first public celebration of Mother’s Day in the USA was supported by Julia Ward Howe (the author of Republic hymn) in 1872 year. Having called upon devoting this holiday to peace, she arranged mass meetings in honor of Mother’s Day in Boston.

In 1907 Anna Jarvis from Philadelphia began campaign to make Mother’s Day a national holiday. Jarvis convinced church of her mother in Grafton, West Virginia, to celebrate Mother’s Day on the anniversary of her mother’s death.

Striving to establish Mother’s Day as a national holiday Julia Jarvis and her supporters regularly wrote to ministers, businessmen and politicians. Their pains ended in success, because in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made an official statement about celebration of Mothers Day on the second Sunday in May.

This day mothers are also honored in Germany, Finland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Australia and Belgium. In other countries this holiday is celebrated at different times of the year.

According to the holidays popularity list Americans put Mother’s Day on the fifth place, after St. Valentine’s Day, Father’s day, Easter and Christmas. This day children, no matter what their relations with parents are, have to visit their mother and gift her a symbolical present.
