 | In Germany Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. In Ancient Greece Mother’s Day was celebrated in the middle of March in Rea’s honor – Zeus’ the Great mother. In the UK Mother’s Day was proclaimed by the king - Genrih III (1216-1239) for the first time on the third Sunday of March. People were forbidden to work, they had to visit their parents.
In Touring (it is one of the sixteen federal lands of Germany) in the middle ages it was a special Sunday (it has to be in spring because spring is the beginning of life and mother gives us this life), when people visited their relatives and wished them wealth and prosperity. Mothers were blessed separately and with special ceremonial.
The tradition to celebrate Mother’s Day annually and publicly came to Germany from the USA at the beginning of XX century. In particular that time the tradition to celebrate this holiday in May was founded.
For the first time Mother’s Day was celebrated in Germany in 1923 and it’s been celebrated as a national holiday since 1933.
People present flowers, little souvenirs, nice small items, unexpected surprises and hot kisses to their mothers. The main gift is attention, though. Adult children visit parents’ house and tell them: “We don’t forget about you and appreciate you very much.”
