Unlike the International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8, Mother’s Day is devoted only to mothers and pregnant women.According to some sources, Mother’s Day traditions come from female mysteries of old Rome, when people worshiped the Great Mother, a Goddess considered to be the Mother of all Gods. It is known that in England in the 15th century people celebrated the Mothering Sunday – the forth Sunday of the Lent devoted to the honor of mothers all over the country. With the time passed by, the holiday gained another meaning- people started to honor the Mother Church, but not women. Thus, Mother’s Day became a church holiday to some extend.
In the United States, Mother's Day celebration started in 1872. It was initiated by Julia Ward Howe and was close to the Pease Day in its meaning. In the USA Mother’s Day is celebrated annually since 1907 on the second Sunday of May. In 1914 the President Woodrow Wilson recognized Mother's Day as a national holiday. Mother’s Day is also celebrated on the same date in Denmark, Malta, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Japan, Belgium, Ukraine, Estonia.
Maltese celebrate Mother’s Day since the ancient times. Historians believe that the tradition originates from the times when people worshiped the Great Mother, a Goddess considered to be Mother of all Gods.
In Greece Mother’s Day is celebrated on May 9. The history goes since Antique Greece, when in spring Greeks celebrated the Day of Gaea, the mother of all Gods.
In Finland Mother’s Day became an official holiday celebrated on the second Sunday of May since 1927. On this holiday people hang flags, children prepare presents for their moms, and fathers try to cook spending their time in the kitchen – everyone is trying to do his best to congratulate his mom and grannies.
In Estonia Mother’s Day has been celebrated on the second Sunday of May since 1992. People hang flags on this holiday. On the eve of the day morning performances are carried out in kindergartens, concerts for moms are held in schools. Children present hand-made cards and gifts to their moms.
In Ukraine people started to celebrate Mother’s Day in 1929, in Galichin, but the holiday was forgotten with time. Nowadays this holiday is decently celebrated on the second Sunday of May, no festivals are held.
In Russia Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday since 1998 according to the President’s edict. During this holiday men congratulate women having many children, unwed mothers, and women, who have achieved a success in up-bringing children.
In Byelorussia Mother’s Day is celebrated on October 14 since 1996 according to the President’s edict.
