 | Every year on the last Monday in May the Americans recollect dead people. Before there was a custom to put flags and flowers on the graves of the soldiers who were killed during the Civil War. Now it is the Memorial Day to recollect all the dead people who were killed on wars and generally all the dead people. In 1971 the president Richard Nixon proclaimed the Memorial Day a federal holiday. It is celebrated on the fourth Monday in May. Throughout the country solemn ceremonies are organized where people honor the memory of fallen compatriots, who were killed on wars or during a civic duty performance. In many towns and settlements veterans take part in special ceremonies in cemeteries or at monuments of those fallen in battle. Somewhere parades are held, somewhere funeral services take places or special services are organized in churches, schools and other public places. On the Memorial Day Americans recollect not only military men. It is also the day of a personal memory. Both families and individuals revere their memory about their dead relatives. This day is celebrated solemnly and suitably – with church services, cemetery attendance, flowers on graves and just silent tribute respect.
On the Memorial Day the US president and the executive vice-president make a speech and lay a wreath on graves of fallen heroes. Armed forces representatives fire a salute from shooting weapon. Veterans and their relatives come to cemeteries to lay wreathes and say prayers. It is the day of meditations.
However, for the most Americans this holiday is a signal of the summer beginning and they have a rest on a beach, in the mountains or at home for these three days.
