Did I do the right thing?!

Ok, I and this guy had been dating for 5months and we broke up. Because of personal reasons we didn't get along too good and stuff. But anyways I was kind of really mean to him I mean, I don't want him back but I regret hurting him because I mean I am a person that's soft hearted and kind.But I want to apologize but I don't want him back because it's not meant to be but I don't know what to say to him because I don't want him to take it that I want him back so what should do/ say? I need some advice thanks.
